10 States Where OB/GYN Physicians Are in Demand

Arizona

The Grand Canyon State may be the ideal destination if you're looking for an exciting place to live and practice, with many opportunities to enjoy Mother Nature at her finest and the amenities of city living. You can explore Arizona's 22 state parks full of natural beauty, visit a historic Old West town like Prescott, or enjoy the sophisticated restaurants and spas of Scottsdale and Phoenix. Tip: if you've never been to the Grand Canyon, start in the mountain town of Flagstaff, which is a major gateway to the canyon.

California

Just about anything that you want to do, you can do in California. If you want sun, surf and sand, California offers some of the best beaches in the world. If you crave mountains, giant redwoods, or stunning deserts, California has those, too. Or if you prefer world-class cities with professional sports teams, haute cuisine dining, a constant stream of food and film festivals, art museums, and more, then California is definitely the state for you.

Indiana

Located between the higher-profile states of Illinois and Ohio, Indiana might not generate as much attention. But don't let this fool you. This Midwestern state is full of interesting activities to occupy and entertain you when you're not working. Start with perhaps the state's most famous landmark, the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, which hosts the world-renowned Indianapolis 500. But if natural wonders are more your speed, plan a visit to cool Marengo Cave in southern Indiana, which offers hiking, camping, crawling tours, gemstone mining, and more.

Kentucky

Bordered on the north by the mighty Ohio River and the Appalachian Mountains on the east, Kentucky is full of history, culture, and adventure. If you choose to take an OB/GYN job in Kentucky, you'll never run out of unique things to do. You could celebrate a uniquely American genre of music at the Bluegrass Music Hall of Fame and Museum in Owensboro. Or you could visit Churchill Downs in Louisville and learn about the history of American Thoroughbred horse racing during a tour of the Kentucky Derby Museum. And since the state bills itself as the Bourbon Capital of the World, your itinerary could include a trip to some of the distilleries on the Kentucky Bourbon Trail.

Michigan

In the 1940s, the Glen Miller Orchestra debuted the famous song, (I've Got a Gal in) Kalamazoo. But today, Kalamazoo, Michigan, is more famous for being an international pharmaceutical and life sciences hub. In fact, Michigan is home to many centers that provide world-class healthcare. You might be able to land an OB/GYN job at one of them. Then, in your downtime, you can try skiing in the winter, and boating and fishing on the Great Lakes or enjoying the famous Cherry Festival in Traverse City in the summer. Michigan is also known as the Lighthouse Capital of the World, so take your time visiting and touring many of the 115+ lighthouses.

Minnesota

How about giving Minnesota a second look? Take a job as an obstetrician or gynecologist in the Land of 10,000 Lakes, and chances are, you'll never want to leave this beautiful state. The state is home to vibrant cities like Minneapolis and St. Paul and Duluth; yes, Duluth. This growing city was recently dubbed "Climate-proof Duluth" for its growing appeal to people moving from warmer parts of the country, and it is situated on beautiful Lake Superior. And be sure to check out the state's glorious array of 66 state parks like Split Rock Lighthouse and Gooseberry Falls.

New Jersey

Yes, New Jersey is tantalizingly close to New York City and all that it has to offer, and that is definitely a draw for OB/GYNs and other physicians seeking work in the Garden State. But don't forget that New Jersey is also home to about 130 miles of beautiful coastland--read: beaches. Visit the famous boardwalk of Atlantic City or take a whale-watching cruise out of Cape May. Or for something completely different, take a trip to Princeton University and take a walking tour of the historic campus and town, including the university's art museum.

North Carolina

North Carolina is home to both green mountains and golden beaches, but there's so much in between to enjoy, as well. Be sure to visit the Research Triangle if you happen to take a job in North Carolina; it's home to the beautiful campuses of Duke University, North Carolina State, and UNC-Chapel Hill, as well as many cultural institutions. If you're a cat lover, don't miss the chance to visit the Carolina Tiger Rescue, a nonprofit wildcat sanctuary. One more tip: be sure to check out the trendy city of Asheville. Whether you have the stamina to tour all 250 rooms of Asheville's famed Biltmore House is up to you, but you can always check out one of the city's many microbreweries afterward.

Ohio

Ohio is a great state for obstetricians and gynecologists who are looking to make a move. Why? It's centrally located, so you can easily visit many places in the Midwest, Northeast, or even the South. But beyond that, it's home to almost countless recreational and cultural gems. You can opt for the quirky, like the Queen City Underground Tour in Cincinnati or the A Christmas Story house tour in Cleveland. Or you can make your musician friends a little jealous by whiling away a few hours in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, also in Cleveland. If you're craving more adventure, you can test yourself to see how many of the 17 rollercoasters you can ride in Cedar Point.

Texas

The old cliche that everything's bigger in Texas stems from the size and scope of this huge state. The job opportunities are wide open in Texas, too, so be sure to check them out. Your lifestyle options encompass everything from upscale, high-rise living in Dallas or Houston to the casual beach life in Galveston. Regardless of where you choose to work, be sure to check out the authentic Tex-Mex cuisine, and of course the famous Texas barbeque joints. Then figure out what else to add to your itinerary for your downtime, like seeing the Alamo or visiting Space Center Houston (or both!).
