Moriah's Inspiring Vision for Communication Sciences
Moriah captured our attention with her heartfelt essay detailing her vision for the future of Speech-Language Pathology. Her commitment to empowering neurodiverse individuals and her innovative approach to therapy reflect the impactful work that healthcare professionals are capable of achieving.
Beyond Communication Challenges
Moriah describes her future therapy room as a place of sanctuary. She writes, “I see myself standing at the heart of a vibrant therapy room […] This space, alive with the rhythm of expression, will be more than my workplace. It will be a sanctuary for voices often overlooked.” For Moriah, therapy is about amplifying the voices of individuals with unique communication needs, including those who use alternative communication methods, such as AAC (Augmentative and Alternative Communication) devices.
Her essay emphasizes moving away from traditional measures of speech progress, such as vocabulary size, to focus on functional communication and the joy of being understood.
Combining Art and Science
With a background in musical theater, Moriah dreams of merging art and science to create an innovative therapy model. She envisions opening a theater company for children with communication challenges, where therapy transcends textbooks. Scripts would become tools for practicing articulation, exploring emotions, and teaching social interaction in a fun and dynamic way.
Moriah writes, “Imagine a child who once struggled to initiate conversation now playing the lead role in a musical designed for their growth. Each note they sing will rewrite what it means to have a communication disorder.”
This fusion of creativity, compassion, and scientific understanding is what makes Moriah a standout future leader in the SLP field.
The Importance of Speech-Language Pathologists
Speech-Language Pathologists play a critical role in healthcare and education. They not only help individuals develop communication skills but also advocate for accessibility, equity, and understanding in the way society views communication challenges.
SLPs work with clients of all ages, addressing issues such as speech delays, language disorders, swallowing difficulties, and more. They serve as a bridge between silence and connection, enabling individuals to express themselves in ways that truly matter.
Professionals like Moriah remind us how vital the work of SLPs is, especially as the field continues to evolve toward neurodiversity empowerment and innovative communication methods.
