We're Pleased to Introduce you to Debra Wood

Registered Nurse and Writer/Editor

Debra Wood, a registered nurse and writer/editor living with her dog in Central Florida, was born and raised in Western New York State. While working in home health and sliding off the road a couple of times in the ice and snow, she decided while enjoying the work, there had to be a better and safer place to practice home health, prompting a move to the Sunshine State

Wood holds an associate degree in nursing from Erie Community College in Amherst, New York, and a bachelor’s degree in communication from the University of Buffalo. Writing and editing for AMN Healthcare enables her to draw on both of her talents – nursing and writing and editing. Wood has written for most of the AMN brands during the past 20-plus years, starting with NurseZone. As a nurse, she has a solid understanding of health care and medical topics, including the business of health care.

After a number of years providing home health care with the Visiting Nurse Association, Wood focused on her writing and editing career. However, she also worked at a dual diagnosis substance abuse and psychiatric hospital and at an alternative high school, using both skills and making a difference with varied populations.

Nursing and helping patients never lost its allure for Wood. She continues to practice at a free clinic one or more afternoons and evenings each week. Access to good medical care should be a right for all Americans, and the clinic makes that possible for low-income, uninsured Central Floridians.

As a full-time freelance writer, she knows how to prioritize, respect deadlines and deliver results to ensure client satisfaction. Her editorial skills have blossomed as she has written hundreds of articles for consumer, medical and nursing publications, Internet sites, magazines and newspapers during her communications career. She is an active member of the American Medical Writers Association, heading up local networking events.

Wood attained professional certification and award recognition for her creative work. She has received the international nursing honor society Sigma Theta Tau’s media award for excellence in journalism, as well as writer’s association honors for her creative work.

An active member of the American Medical Writers Association, Wood heads up local networking events. In her free time, she enjoys playing with her dog, reading, volunteering at local nonprofit organizations, attending live theater, chilling at the beach and socializing with friends.
